Curriculum for Key Stage 1
The Governors are required to implement a curriculum with breadth and balance. In order to maintain breadth and balance we use an integrated topic approach, which covers all areas of the curriculum and aspects of the National Curriculum.
Activities are matched to the ability level and interests of children. A variety of teaching methods are used, working with individuals, small groups and whole class groups where appropriate.
The 1988 Education Reform Act introduced a National Curriculum for all schools. This is made up of three core subjects, English, Mathematics and Science. Information Communication Technology, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education. PSHE, Religious Education and Citizenship are also taught.
A revised National Curriculum has been implemented from September 2000. From 1998 the teaching has included a Literacy time and Nureracy time as recommended by the Dfes. These are being adapted and staff are working to prepare for the implementation of the new Primary Strategy in September 2008.
All subjects are taught according to the recommendations for Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7) and children work normally within levels 1-3 of each subject.
